I have paid my taxes 12 yrs ago and it is stll showing on my credit report-why?

  1. Probably the IRS didn't report to the credit bureau that you paid it.  You may have to call them.  Bad credit is supposed to be removed after 7 years but if it's showing that you still owe then it might not get removed.  I would suggest you call the IRS and the credit bureau and make sure it gets taken care of.  There are 3 credit bureaus, have you checked your report with all 3 of them?  If you haven't looked at your credit reports at www.annualcreditreport.com this year then you can view them for free.  You are allowed one free credit report per year from each of the 3 credit bureaus.


  2. The folks that gather information about tax liens for credit reports are not paid to also gather information about the removal of those liens.  The end result is that you need to get proof that you paid off the lien and send it to each of the credit companies.

  3. After that length of time it should be off.  Contact the credit bureau and ask.  There may be a screwup that needs to be fixed.
