Question:

I have plaster lathe walls in my victorian house. 1 wall is crumbling away!?

If i were to take it all off so the wood is remaining could i bond plaster board to it then have it skimmed??? Also is it ok to have the ceiling skimmed also ( plaster lathe) the ceiling seems solid or would you recomend plaster board over the top and then have it skimmed??? can anyone help please. Thanks

  1. Yes.   There are different wall systems in older homes.

    One has a metal screening with a bond-coat and skim-coat plaster.

    The other uses lath boards and has horse-hair plaster over it.

    Either of which is replaceable without having to remove any woodwork.   Call in an experienced plasterer, they'll be able to look at it and tell you exactly what can be done.

    You might also want to call in a carpenter to find out why the wall got so stressed to cause it to crumble.   You may have some settling issues that need to be addressed.
