  1. It might be easier in that you wont have to go to a trade type of school to get basic knowledge and understanding of aircraft and there many systems, you can get approval from the FAA,study the guides that have the questions for your airframe and powerplant rating and start studying, good luck.

  2. If you had prior experience in the Air Force in aircraft repair, you would know the answer to the question, and you would not need to ask us.

  3. Yes - all job related experience helps a lot.

  4. It will help that you have some basic knowledge in aircraft maintenance but unless you have a letter from your previous command you will be unable to bypass the requirements for taking your writtens, orals and practials for obtaining your A&P certificates.

If you think your ready and still have a way of getting in contact with you last command  pick up a copy of the Airframe, Powerplant, and General test guides from ASA. (can be found on line or at a flight instruction school) These are actual FAA written test questions if you can answer these correctly; I recommend at least 80-90% of them.  Pick up copies of the Practical Test Standards (these can be downloaded off of the FAA web site) for the Airframe, Powerpland and General as these will be what your DME will test you on for your Orals and Practicals.  After reviewing all of this if you feel confident that you have the necessary traning and knowledge to pass the writtens, and O's & P's then by all means go for it but if not the best way to go and the way that most people end up going any ways is through a part 143 program.  They are usually very inexpensive, unless you want to go though a program that is going to give you a degree then your cost is going to go up, and can be found just about everwhere.

  5. It will make it easier than it is for someone who has no experience in aviation trying to get there license.
