I have questions about a manual transmission?

When i turn on the car and i want it to just stay on, do i just leave the car in neutral and i can just hold down the brake instead of leaving it in 1st and holding down the clutch and brake?

When downshifting, lets say i am in third gear and i want to stop at a red light, can i just brake the car and before stopping push in the clutch and then change it to first gear(holding down both clutch and brake) or neutral(just brake)[kinda has to do with previous ?]?

While driving in traffic because of the stop and go, what is the best way to drive on the freeway, so the car will not stall?

Does the car automatically go backwards if i just hold the clutch all the way down?

Also, i am worried about parking in a garage because i am afraid that if i go to slow the car will stall, any suggestions?

Any other info. that you can think of that may be helpful to me besides the basics(because i think i got them down) please tell me.

  1. 1. You can put it in neutral and just hold down the brake

    2. I place the car in neutral and just brake to a stop, if the light changes back to green before I stop then I just go to whatever gear I feel is necessary. That way I avoid riding the clutch plus I prefer not to downshift because it's harder on the engine.

    3. That just depends on what you feel is more comfortable

    4. no, that just allows the car to roll in whatever direction is downhill

    5. practice finding a balance between the clutch and gas.

Tip: Find someone to teach you instead of relying on the internet.

    (A)  When starting the car its best to have the clutch in just in case you missed neutral.  It is ok to have you foot on the clutch say at lights but the best choice if you are remaining stationary for period of time is to select neutral.  Most lights now days work in pattens so you will soon learn when the lights in your area are about to change your way and so select first then.

(A)The best practice is to move down through each gear as your slowing down.  That way should (say the lights change to green) you be able to move away as you are already in the right gear.

Note. As a general rule. Brakes slow the car down. Not the gear box.

While driving in traffic because of the stop and go, what is the best way to drive on the freeway, so the car will not stall?

    (A)  Move away slowly.  Hold it in second and the revs not all that high but also not slow enough to risk a stall.   There is no hurry so having a gap open and then slowly close as you catch up is ok.  If you time it right you should be able to get the car moving and not have to stop every 20 meters.

Does the car automatically go backwards if i just hold the clutch all the way down?

    (A) Not normally.  Yet if your are at a stop and facing up a hill or maybe a strong wind may also be able to push you backwards.

(A).  Yes it will.  Experience is the only answer.  Why not find a quite public car park and practice driving up to say a plastic bin and stopping at it.

Any other info. that you can think of that may be helpful to me besides the basics(because i think i got them down) please tell me.

When coming to a complete stop if you maintain pressure on the brake peddle there is a jerk as the car stops.  Try releasing the pressure just a bit a moment before it stops.  This will make the stop more gentle.

Again something you could practice while in the car park using that plastic bin to stop at.

    ASAP.

Find in your area an defensive driving course. Also called advanced driving course.  You only need to learn a single thing that saves you from a single even minor accident in a lifetime, and its paid for its self.

Yet money aside, it may also save you or a loved one.

  3. UH learn how to drive a stick. I don't mean to sound mean but every car has it own feel and honestly you need more experience driving a stick shift.

  4. OK

You can sit idling in neutral with your foot on the brake, you do not need to have the transmission in gear. If it is a short time (like at a signal light) you will make a lot fewer people angry if you leave it in gear so you can move in a timely manner.

You can slow using the method you described, but it will wear your brakes faster than using the transmission to help you slow..... but no big deal.

In stop and go just use an appropriate gear for your speed and push the clutch in when you have to stop, the engine will only stall if you slow to a stop without pushing in the clutch.

The car will roll when you push the clutch in and your foot is off the brake. The direction it rolls (backward or forward) is controlled by gravity at that point.

When parking you slip the clutch a little, it does not always have to be in or out.

The concept of the clutch is that it manually disconnects the engine from the cars drivetrain, an automatic transmission does this at low rpm's automatically so the stopped car won't stall the engine. It is your job to manage the connection on a manual transmission car.

The more you drive it the more comfortable you will get with it.

    Good Luck!

  5. kind of difficult to teach you to drive a manual transmission you need to be instructed hands on,preferably on a side street by some one who know how to drive a manual transmission its going to take some practice but you'll get the hang of it.
