Question:

I have questions about becoming a teacher!! Help!

I am a freshman in college and I change my mind everyday on whether or not I want to be in business or do I want to be a teacher. I am scared to be a teacher because I have worked really hard with my academics, not saying that teachers are not smart or anything. I love the concept of teaching and I have wanted to be one since I was little. I feel like becoming a teacher would be not as challenging as I need.

Also, I am currently in the business program and I have already got 20 hours going into college. Has anyone gotten a double major in education and business?

If I did become a teacher I would want to get my Masters and certification to teach at christian schools. Where are some good schools to get my graduate degree from? Does it make that much difference in salary?

Also any advice would be great!

  1. Easy one - get your business degree and minor in education or do it the other way around; that way, you can do the one you like - AND when you do your student teaching, that will give you a pretty good idea if you're cut out for teaching or not!

  2. Teaching is probably the most challenging profession there is. You have to be a master of your subject matter, a psychologist, an entertainer and a disciplinarian at the same time.

Most teaching jobs require a masters degree so you would be wise to get one now. Any accredited school will be fine.

  3. I majored in elementary education. It would be insanely difficult to double major in business and teaching. Remember that you would need to student teach also which would make it pretty impossible for you to attend business classes. You should major in business for your undergrad and then get a M.A. in teaching after. There are a lot of universities out there with a good Education program. Do some research online and see which ones interest you. Getting an MA will boost your salary and make you more marketable.

  4. i am a student going for education also. here is the trick ( your accademic counselor should have explained this) You need a bachelors degree and hours in a classroom to become a teacher. So the ideal thing to do is get an associates in something else. Such as business. Then in two years your avenue will still be open and you arent waisting your time spent in an education degree before your 4 years.

  5. I am a double major not business but math and education. (it is very hard and is taking me longer than 4 years) What you can do to see if you want to teach is observe a classroom for a couple of hours. If you contact your college's education dept. I'm sure they will help you find a school where you can do this. I thought the same thing, that teaching would not be challenging enough for me.. I was wrong it is much more difficult than it looks. I am attending the same school for my Master's in Ed right after I graduate and no it does not make that much of a difference in pay
