  1. as long as you have cable you dont if you plan on getting rid of that at any time then you will need it

  2. With the economy on the fritz and since cable is a luxury, get the cable box converter as insurance to watching tv, when the choice is cable or food. The converter will let you watch what you want—There are limitations to be sure, but without it there is  a blank screen.

  3. Since you already got a coupon for a coupon-eligible box and you have only 90 days from issue to use it, you have to decide soon.

As of today (5 May 08), there are few to choose from. They basically output video via RF coax and composite (no component, no HDMI, no DVI). They also have few, if any, front panel controls, making you wholly dependent on the remote. And the programming menu is pretty limited to the next hour.

You pretty much can't go wrong w/ what's out there. You just won't get much featurewise. And the stores currently offering them (Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, Walmart) only offer one brand. Since you can only use the coupon once, returning them to try another box at another outlet is not an option.

But the bottom line is that the box will get you ready when most analog broadcast TV signals (except for low power and relay stations) go silent in Feb 2009.
