I have really bad shinsplints this year and am not able to run hard during practices. I have my last meet next week and then track is over. Then I have a break until august. Will I be healthy to run cross country? It will be my first year running cross country

  1. you will be healthy enough cause you will be able to have a break and my coach tells me to ice my shins every night and then they will not hurt anymore but this is going to be my first year for cross country i told my coach that i will practice to stay fit for basketball and next track season but i don't wnat to go to any cross country meets cause i don't think that i would be able to do good enough for that and im a sprinter but i think that you should just ice you shins and go out for cross country it may be fun for you and then your times will get better

  2. Yes, if you take care of the problem now. I have been running for 8 years now and would recommend the following:

I would strengthen the core: calves, quads, hams, back and abdominal (the "six pack" muscles along with the obleks), chest and arms. But when strengthening these muscles, I would focus more on the muscle endurance not the muscle bulk. For more advice for this, I would consult with a personal trainer. For the running part, I would stay flexible as it helps/contributes to your balance (so do the muscles in your core) but also helps prevent some injuries like pulled muscles and shin splints. Also, I would try to make up a schedule where you can run for X amount of days and try to have a long run. I would start off slowly, running about 2-3 miles per run for the first week and increase my mileage per week. Make sure you have the following: a good diet, hydration, sleep, a good sense on how to take care of your body, and sleep. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Good Luck!!!

  3. I have the same problem right now. My doctor told me to run and afterwords, put my leg in tap water. For some reason it works better than ice does. Hopefully that will help your shin.

  4. Shin splints are usually caused from running in shoes that aren't padded enough, or running on hard surfaces like pavement all the time. The only way I know to get rid of them is to go back and forth between ice and heat, and stretch like crazy. Take some time off, let your legs heal, then start back into running slowly. You'll be fine to start xc in the summer.
