Hello, I have recently acquired two Raleigh Twenty folding bikes with Sturmey-Archer Internal-gear Hubs, made in 1969 and 1972. What is the recommended method to shift gears to avoid damage?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. I have always stopped pedalling completely while shifting but releasing the pressure on the pedals should do equally well.

  2. Nice. Just reduce stroke/pedal pressure when you shift. You can even shift while stopped. They are almost bullet proof with proper care. I would recommend cleaning and lube if you don't know how they have been cared for. Here is some good info:

  3. Itsas... answered great.

I would add that the very small linked chain must be oiled frequently as the tiny chain is hard to replace or fix as a special chain tool is needed .
