  1. You can get an air pump or air stone which will just air-ate the water, or better still a filter system which will also filter the water.  Filter is better as it does both.

  2. Like you, I knew little about keeping fish. When I got my 4foot tank I sought professional help. The air pump was the first item on his list of things I needed along with a number of filters including an under gravel filter. I ran all of these for 2 weeks before he would let me add the fish.

He even added some algae from one of the dirty filters out of his own tank to start the bacteria going in my new tank. Having said this, the filters are mostly air operated. I have only one external power filter.

    Hope this helps.

  3. How big is the fish tank?

Do you have a filter?  What size?

What kind of fish?  How many?

If the tank is under 15 gallons, ==and you have a good strong filter== you can get away with not having an air stone to add oxygen and help break the surface tension of the water.  But your fish will still do better with one.  Much over 15, you need at least one air stone for each 15 gallons of water to keep the oxygen mix high.  This is better for your fish, and helps keep the beneficial bacteria alive and well.

  4. All good answers but basically yes as will do more good than harm.

Well it won`t harm at all.

  5. Does it have a power filter?

If it does you dont need an air pump.

If you dont have a power filter, get one.

  6. with my goldfish i don't- and there fine

with my tropical fish i don't- and there fine

with my marine fish i don't- and there fine

but it does come down to having a power filter and enough water movement. so if you do have some power filter or water movement it should all be fine. if not just but a cheap small filter.

but my answer would be <<<NO>>>

  7. Yes, if you want your fish to live and it helps keep the tank clean and fresh.

  8. In my years of fishkeeping I have learned one thing. That is having an airpump is basically a law of science in fish keeping. You can buy ones that do not make a lot of sound. You should adapt it to a power head. This will give your fish the best quality oxygen. You can buy a big one. They usually do not make that much sound as the smaler ones do. The big airpumps are more silent and you can set the amount of air that it pumps.

  9. well yeah if you want 2  it helps keep the water clean and full if oxgen

  10. OH yeah.
