I have recently bought a secondhand 22 foot yacht, do you have to register private yachts in the UK?

  1. They are a bit like bicycles. Sometimes, if they get stolen, you have a devil of a job proving the boat is yours.


  2. If you intend to moor it somewhere.

  3. If you don't register, don't go abroad (eg France or Belgium or Holland), you'll be in big trouble and expense (the French customs are quite likely to make you pay VAT and import duty on the spot, impound the boat if you can't).

    The UK Small Ships Register is cheap and a good idea.

  4. No - although you may have to give details if you wish to hire a mooring as stated above.

The UK is one of a few countries which maintains remarkable freedom for boat owners.  You do not have to register the boat and you do not have to have any personal license as in other countries but both are quite a good idea.  You will need third part insurance at least to use any marina or mooring and then you may find the insurance company makes requirements.
