  1. Bald faced hornets are actually a type of yellowjacket - technically not hornets at all.

    The bald faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) is the largest of these yellowjacket species, but there are others throughout North America, and they are also not the only one that is black and white in coloration.

    So yes, the small ones you've seen are probably a different species of yellowjacket, and not the same species as bald faced hornets.
