  1. CASS is a qualification that airline pilots get... So pretty much any pilot can ride in the Jumpseat of any other airline. That's the easiest way of explaining it.

  2. You simply run in and knockout the cabin crew.

  3. You are probably seeing "deadheading" flight crewmembers. Airline flight crew (pilots) are permitted by FAA rules to ride in the "jump seat" -- an additional seat (or two) located behind the operating flight crew.

Flight crew can use these seats when travelling between airports on assignment, or when travelling for pleasure.

Since they are trained aircrew, the FAA allows them to ride up front as an  "Observer Member of the Crew"..

Company & FAA Check Pilots also use these seats in performing their duties.

Under FAA rules, no person, other than those described above and Flight Attendants on duty, are allowed to enter a U.S. carrier cockpit during any phase of flight.

  4. After 9-11, only the cockpit crew is allowed in the cockpit.  Only exception is the appointed flight attendant when one of the flight crew needs to use the on-board facilities.

  5. As someone else mentioned, after 911 things  have changed, but if you are flying in a small private plane, say a Cessna 172, it is common for people to come up next to the pilot and take a peek at what's going on, or even listen in on the radio chatter. If you're really lucky, you may be even able to sit in the co-pilot seat, if there's only one pilot flying the plane and you get his permission as pilot in command.

Commercial flights are a whole different story, don't even ask. Before you know it someone from the Federal govt. will have you face first on the floor and in hand-cuffs. They don't like jokers and are very paranoid.
