The trunk of the fruit trees are only 4 inches in diameter. Using the garden walls available at Lowes or Home Depot can be costly and and will look too big for these trees. If there are some planters available out there that are meant for this purpose, I would like to know. Thank you.

  1. I would plant some Hostas around the trees.  They are low maintenance and sturdy.  If you are picking fruit you would want something sturdy.

  2. Well, I guess I'm a super cheap and lazy gardener,  but I would consider throwing (or transplanting from somewhere else) a local shade-loving species.  If it's a native plant, it will be cheap (or free) to plant around your trees and will require much less maintenance.

I guess I don't really understand what you're planning with the garden walls, but I would say be careful doing anything that would stunt the trees' root growth.

  3. if you do this, you will be putting something under the trees that is then going to compete with  them for water and soil nutrients..the roots of a young tree are not that big, either and can be damaged by your digging or piling soil up deeper than the tree can 'breathe' thru, which can damage the trees...... the fruit will be lessened and the plants down below will not prosper either.... better to use potted plants to 'decorate' and not upset the trees at all....

  4. Those concrete rings you can get at Home Depot are cheap, but make sure you don't add soil over the graft line or you will get suckers all over the place.  I planted nysturshens around my fruit trees and they re-seed themselves and I haven't re-planted them in many years.
