I have shares of stock, but where?

Question

I know, from childhood, that I own shares of stock in at least two major companies. I know they are in my name, but I have no idea how to find when/where I invested in them. I know little about these types of things but was hoping there was some way to find how much stock I own. I know which companies but not how to access or sell them (if i wanted...) any help?
