  1. Aviod running on roads, sidewalks, hard surfaces.

Find a softer place (like a earthen trail in the park) to run till it feels better and when it does, try to use the softer running location for 1/3 of your runs, as splints tend to come from repeated jarring of your lower leg from running on unforgiving surfaces.

  2. you might have a pronation(when your feet roll in) this can cause shin splints and irritation of the achillies tendon. i would suggest getting a running shoe like the adidas adistar control 5 which have good support. also you can get inserts called superfeet that you can pick up at eastern mountain sports for $25, make sure to get the green packaged one for high arches though.

  3. i get shin splints also and they suck. Mine aren't bad enough that i can't run. what i do is i ice after every run for 20-30 minutes. i also fill a dixie cup with water, freeze it and then massage my shins with the ice piece.

Also try walking on you're heels with your toes pointed up, this sometimes helps also.  Hope I helped!

  4. Shin splints are the result of muscle imbalance where the back of the leg is stronger than the front muscles.  To correct this imbalance, lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge.  Slowly pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress.  Hold for 1 or 2 seconds, then repeat.  Try to work up to 2 or 3 sets of 10.   An alternative or supplement to this is the standing toe raise. Just balance yourself, then raise one toe off the ground standing just on your heel. Then repeat with the other foot.

    Good Luck

  5. you might be running to much on your heels, run on yout toes.
