I have sims 2 life stories in PC, does that mean I can still buy an expansion pack?

I was planning on buying sims 2 university in PC, but I don't know if I can actually use it for sims 2 life stories or do I actually need 2 buy just the sims 2?

No the expansion packs will not work with Life Stories.  You would need to get Sims2, Sims2 Deluxe, or Sims2 Double Deluxe.  But rather than throwing all your money toward the old games, you might want to consider waiting until February '09 when they release Sims 3.
