  1. If you want to physically store the disk and use the disks themselves, then Sony makes a 400 disk DVD/CD changer. The Sony 400 disk changers can be daisy chained up to 3 units for a capacity of 1200 disks.

    ---EDIT---

You got me thinking about it myself a bit more. I did some more research on the sony 400 disk megachanger. It does not look as though you can daisy chain this unit DVPCX995.

But you can daisy chain the Sony VIAO model media player.

It has only 200 disk capacity though.

If you want to store the disks digitally then you need a media server. Something like Kaleidescape or Escient. If you want to store all of your DVDs and CDs look at spending upwards of 10grand or more. Media servers with the capability you mention are quite expensive. The Sony DVD changers also work with many of these systems

  2. Agree with above - I use the Sony 400 changer myself.  Once you entered most of the titles manually, it works great!

PS3 is a great music and video server!  Since you can connect an external HD to it, the storage space in not a problem.  I am slowly copying all my DVDs to the external HD, and connect the HD it to the PS3.  I use Handbrake soft, and each DVD in native resolution takes up about 3-4gb.  Works great with music and pictures too.

There is a "reasonably" priced media server - SONY HES-V1000 - 200 Blu-Ray Disk player and 500gb HD.  But it is not expandable, and does not have USB to connect external HD.

There is a DYI alternative - and not a very difficult one.  Based on MAC Mini ($700) and external HD (or a few of them).  Detailed instruction can be found here:
