Okay, what 's the difference between hits and visitors?

For example: on one of my stories I have 1.08k hits but 223 visitors in the US. What does it meannn?

a hit is everytime someone goes onto it

and a visitor is who goes on it

for example:

if the same person went on ur story 2 times ud have 2 hits but only 1 visitor
