ok so im taking prealgebra right? and there are these questions that my teacher doesnt bother to explain to the class and i solved all the questions possible but im stuck on these three.

i asked her about one of them and she just told me the answer which was 2. But i dont get WHY its 2 so now im really frustrated and i have like 2 more essays and 5 more homeworks to do after this so if you guys help me out you're really going help me let go of some stress, it's the first week of school and im already stressed as you could be if you were working 24 hours a day. So PLEASE, PLEASE help me. ok here are the questions.

(the bars are absolute value bars)

FIND THE VALUE OF a AND b THAT MAKES THE STATEMENT TRUE.

1. |a+b| = |a| + |b| = the answer is 2 but WHY?

(whats the difference of those 2?)

2. |a+b|<|a|+|b|

(again, whats the difference of the two? can there be more than one answer?)

3. Are there any values of x in which =x is lesser than x? Are tehre any values of x in which -x is GREATER than x?

PLEASE PLEASE.

you can tell me to do my homework myself. But trust me, it took me a long time before i finally decided to post it up here.

Thank you for your time.

  1. I'm not sure why your teacher told you the answer to #1 was 2. There are multiple answers.

    1. a >= 0 and b >=0. Both a and b must be positive for the statement to be true, but any positive number will work, not just 2.

    2. Multiple answers.

    a < 0 and b < 0. Any negative number will work.

    a > 0 and b < 0.

    a < 0 and b > 0.

3a. Are there any values of x in which -x < x? YES. Any positive number. x must be > 0.

3b. Are there any values of x in which -x > x? YES. Any negative number. x must be < 0.

  2. I guess,I know the third one.

    If x is negetive,then -x is positive.for example,if x is -2,-x is -*-2 which is again +2 which is mpore than -2.
