That's another picture of one.

I have participated in insect collection for our state DNR - we used lights above a sheet at night.  Found other insects with very lacy, transparent wings.   Try it some time.

well there are certainly glass butterflies that you can buy on eBay that would make a nice paperweight but there are such things called glass wing butterflies.  

Glass wing Butterfly(Greta Oto) is a brush-footed butterfly where its wings are transparent. The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. They are found in the range which extends throughout Central America into Mexico.

as for being a hoax i don't know but i hope this helps a little.
