I'm 17 years old and I just got diagnosed with PVC's,also I have high blood pressure and rapid heart rate.. the ER doctor gave me a meroprolol 25mg when I was there and it just made me feel like total c**p, and ive been reading about it making alot of other people the same way. So i'm going to see if I can get switched to toprol as i've been hearing the better things about it. I just need some answers on these medicines...is this a good idea to switch or is metroprolol better? also is there any serious things that can happen with these medicines? because im reading the SERIOUS side effects list and it says call your doctor if you are experiencing Anxiety or irregular heart beats...well I have anxiety to begin with and also irregular heartbeats which would be the PVC's...how am I suppose to know if I should go to the hospital or not? Any tips would be helpful i'm just kind of scared to take a medicine that messes with my heart rate...maybe im just being a wuss but just want to be safe. Thanks

  1. You are not a wuss.  You are just having some anxiety over your illness, sort of like a panic attack.  I spent time in ER's when first diagnosed.

Now, Metroprolol and Toprol are the same medication.  One is the generic form, Toprol is the brand name.  If you have concerns about the medication, sit down and talk to your physician and your pharmacist.

Toprol will strengthen and slow your heart down.  I take 100 mg twice a day.

I encourage you to see your doctor

  2. Metroprolol is a generic form of toprol,it is the same thing and it is a very good drug for blood pressure and high heart rate, just give it some time,Ive been on it for years for the same thing.

  3. They are both in the beta blocker family.  Sometimes they will drop your heart rate to 60 or lower and that will make you tired.  An ER Doctor should never be considered for a final diagnosis.  See a general practitioner or a specialist (cardiologist).  Don't stop taking the medication without a Doctor's advice.  I have taken both meds and I like Toprol best.  Count your pulse for 30 seconds and multiply times 2, that is your heart rate.  If it is below 60, then you should call the ER and ask if you should still take it.

Sometimes it takes your body a while to get used to any new medication.

There are 2 forms of metoprolol there is Metoprolol Tartrate which is generic for lopressor and  Metoprolol Succinate which is generic for Toprol.  They are pretty much the same, but I still did best with the Toprol.  Also, there is an extended release Metoprolol XL or Toprol XL.  They gradually release the medication over a 24 hour period of time. I like that better.  If it makes you tired start taking it at bedtime, that may help until you can get to another Doctor.  Beta blockers sometimes help PVC's, but if you miss a dose or stop the med, it will increase your PVC's.

Also, talk to the Doctor about your anxiety.  Make an appointment and get lined out.

  4. I have friends on metoprolol and they are just fine.  It's one of the safest heart drugs on the market.
