  1. MESSENGER SPAM

this set up is for Internet Explorer alone

do you get pop ups claiming that your computer is at risk?

those are called "Messenger Spam" !

    to stop messenger spam:

    open start page

    open administrative tools

    open services

these services are in alphabetical order

    you need to close two:

    a] Alerter

    b] Messenger

NOT related to MSN messenger or any other instant messenger

    right click each service

    click properties

    from drop down menu,select disable

another method to deal with those that get through is to copy the pop up address at the top of the pop up or pop under [ starts up AFTER you close a window ]

    open internet options [ start--control panel--internet options ]

    open content tab

    open settings

    open enable

    enter address

    click never

    close

    open Advanced tab

check to see if pop up blocker is checked

    close

    reboot

  2. It sounds like you have a SMITFRAUD VIRUS, which gives false warnings of infections - as well as messages in the SYSTRAY (down by the clock).  This virus requires a special program and specific steps to remove.  Below is information from Bleeping Computer.

    HTH!

    ======================================...

Smitfraud / Generic Zlob / Quicknavigate / Virtual Maid REMOVAL

    From www.BleepingComputer.com

    What this program does:

SmitFraud has become a term to mean an infection where fake security alerts appear in your taskbar stating that you are infected. These alerts tend to be accompanied by a rogue anti-spyware program installed on your computer without your consent. Clicking on one of these fake security alerts will either bring you to a home page where you can purchase other fraudulent software or will install automatically, without your permission, one of these software.

Tools Needed for this fix: SmitFraudFix.zip which is available for download at:

  3. We ve different types of spyware and they way they all operate.

Most of them nowadays after healing or deleting them, seem to appear again after restart of machine.

This is due to, some have a backup file that retrieves all data after restart, some spread widely on the machine creating paths in almost all start up application files and folders.

I have seen something of that kind on my machine several times.

it behaves like windows security popping out a message concerning you have a virus/spyware/malicious software on your machine and wanting you to download and buy their product. When ever it opens,

open task manager (CTRL ALT DEL), under application, find the program right click on it and go to process

Note: if it runs on explorer.exe in processes or ur browser this will not solve the problem, donot end process tree.

if it is a strange program, end process tree, note the name it uses.

If only you know the name of the file popping up the message or you know the name of the virus/spyware you deleted previously, click start and search, search in hard disk/local disk, it would be found in the windows folder.

delete the file, if does not permit, rename it with .bak

after all these open registry ( run) regedit

CTRL + F this is to search, type in your search ( spyware name)

delete all values keys and extensions of it.

    check

run, type msconfig, check startup (tab) , if you see a strange program you don't know, untick it.

You can simply perform system restore to a previous date b4 the day it happened.

    sometimes works.

I recommend avast too. it is great, after installing avast, let it scan after

restart b4 it loads welcome screen. That operation works greatly. It might work out for depending on the kind of spyware. uninstall it after scaning and use AVG8.0 if you have a good memory, it has a spyware  protection but back it up with spybot search & destroy.

Don't forget to perform disk clean up, clear history, cookies, password, forms.

get a registry cleaner e.g. regcure and spybot search & destroy
