  1. they tell you that just to be on the safe side. it is because if you don't eat there is nothing for you to vomit up and aspirate (choke) on while you are under the anesthetic. try not to forget. it will also help if the anesthetic gives you an upset stomach after surgery.

  2. Right.  The midnight thing is to make sure it's out of your stomach for surgery, that way the anesthesia can have it's full intended effect.

  3. You are not supposed to eat after midnight. It could be dangerous, so don't just forget.

  4. You might hurl after you have anesthesia..... do you want to do that ? I am sure the staff at the office would appreciate you NOT hurling everywhere.

  5. it's not 12 yet is it so it is fine

  6. They will cancel the surgery.

The anesthesiologist will not feel comfortable if there is food in your stomach becuase should you vomit, it could cause you to choke.

  7. Just don't put anything else in your mouth. Water is ok, if you need to take a pill, but otherwise - NO MORE  IN YOUR MOUTH NOT EVEN A MINT.

The reason you are asked not to eat is that when  "put to sleep" for the procedure, some people react to the medicines given  - they vomit.

If you throw up and there is nothing in your stomach - there is far less chance of you sucking it into your lungs and getting an infection. Not everyone gets sick, but some people do, and it's safer for you to have nothing to puke up.

If your surgery is tomorrow morning and you don't eat anything else tonight, you should be ok.
