Question:

I have the following ingredients - would like to do some sort of stew but have no idea how to go about it!

I have 6 pork loin steaks, leek, onion, swede, carrot, gravy granules and stock cubes. I have a big pan I can use on the hob and I also have a casserole dish - unsure which way is the best to cook. I also have dumpling mix and was gonna try some sort of stew and dumpling concoction??

  1. We are speaking two different forms of cooking english here but I will try to give you some guidance.  i don't know what swede is or a hob but I can sorta guess a hob is the top of the stove.

    To make a stew, cut the meat in cubes, coat it in flour seasoned with salt and pepper and brown it in oil. Add your chopped vegetables and saute for a little while to blend and brighten the flavors.  Add at least four stock cubes and add at least six cups of water and stew together for about an hour.  To thicken, you will add the gravy granules.

    If you want to add dumplings then you probably should go ahead and do the whole thing on the top of the stove and not in the oven.  Add the dumplings (made according to the package) before you thicken the stew, after the vegetables are tender and while it is still soupy.(You can add extra water and bring the stew to a boil if you have to OR cook them separately and add them to the stew after you have thicken it.)

    Yikes, I thought stew was simple!

    You can always chop the meat and throw everything in the pan and call it soup!


  2. Ok, dice up some of your pork to make about a pint of diced meats. Put about 2 or 3 stock cubes in the large pot and put in the meat. bring the water level up to about half full and bring to boil. Add your diced veggies. turn the heat down to simmer and cook for a couple of hours checking that it isn't getting low on liquid. Season according to your taste.

    to add dumplings, mix them and turn the heat up so the stew is boiling furiously. Drop the dumplings in the boiling liquid by small spoonfuls. Turn the heat back down to medium and cover the pot and cook according to the directions on the dumpling mix.
