I have the new Sony HDR-SR11 and it only comes w USB port. Is there a firewire attachment to transferr?

I know it's better to transfer video with firewire but my camcorder only has mini usb port. What should I do so I won't loose the HD quality when I transfer to my laptop so I can make DVD's?

the video STREAM* (not file) from a miniDV tape has to be CAPTURED via firewire & capture app to produce a video FILE ...w/usb- possiblity of drop frames / unsync... a large number of dropped frames will result in poor quality, "choppy" video & audio output.  Since it is a video stream, the lenght of time to capture is the same as the lenght of time the video playsback. But tape formats are best for editing due to lesser compression.

for hdd (sr11), DvD or mem.card vcams, video is already stored as FILES... and these are not streamed (only video on tape is) but just IMPORTED, as in drag & drop using file mgmt-windows explorer. Transfer of files is very fast just like a pc internal hdd. In these instances, firewire is not needed, usb would suffice. For Mem.cards, a usb-card reader will do.

This is the reason why hdd, dvd & mem card vcams are not equipped w/ firewire ports. Heard that Vista doesn't support usb capture of tape-based video.. .haven't got time to test.

I'm not a pro by any means, but i don't think a firewire is superior to USB. Firewire used to be, but after USB 2.0 came out, it was just as fast. The main issue you are going to run into is you will need a HD-DVD burner of Blu-Ray burner and a HD DVD/Blu-Ray player. If you just want to watch movies in HD from your computer you will need HDMI.

mini dv cameras are the ones that use firewire, minidvd has to be converted and the hard drive hd cameras use a USB connection. Read your manual. Any kind of adaptor would defeat the purpose of firewire.
