Question:

I have the opportunity to set my own salary, how do you determine your worth?

I've been asked to submit my own salary for a new position within our company. I want to make sure I am not under-paying myself (it's a directorship role), but I don't want to come off looking like a money-hungry fool either. This is with a marketing firm that has 500+ people in it, so I'll be managing a sizable team of people and building out a new business unit. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  1. It sounds like a big job. I would determine your salary upon your social skills, your education, and your previous work. Look at your resume to remind yourself of how much you were getting paid for similar jobs.

I'm not that great with this kind of stuff. Hope I helped!

  3. monster.com has a thing where you determine your worth

  4. For senior-level positions, it's better to stick with a 30% raise over your current gross. That's my opinion, of course, but it's an option I've seen more optimum when moving to a leadership role.

  5. Go to salary.com or salaryexpert.com and enter the information for the job.

  6. A comparison with a similar position in other similar organizations might always be a good start.

  7. If you know anyone in a similar position well enough to ask, you could use input from them to come up with a reasonable estimate.
