What is it and should I try something over-the-counter before going to see a doctor?

It sounds like a bladder infection which I have had in the past. Do you feel like you've still got to go even after you've just been a minute ago, and it's painful when you do. I usually have to get antibiotics from the doctor to fix it - you can get Ural from the chemist, which is supposed to help with the burning, but I don't find it helps that much. You probably should go to the doctor.Hope this helps

Try taking cranberry pills and drinking lots of 100% cranberry juice.

sounds like possibly a urinary tract or bladder infection. try drinking some cranberry juice or take the tablets (if u don't like the juice). if that doesn't clear it up u may need to see a doctor and have them prescribe something for u. i had a bladder infection before and was prescribed AZO (spell?) for it.
