Question:

I have this idea but I'm not sure how to make it a reality?

I want to give piano lessons to children who otherwise couldn't afford such a pass time. I'd have enough students to provide books for those who wouldn't be able to pay. The thing is, however, I'm not sure how to get the word out, nor do I know where to host these lessons. I suppose I could have them at my house, but we live in a residential area and I don't want these children to have to commute very far.

So, my question is, how do I get this little project of mine up and off the ground???

  1. It's a very good idea NOT to have these lessons at your home. That could open you up to a host of liabilities.

You should a criminal background check done on yourself and have this on display for any parent who asks to see it. You should also have letters of recommendation from people -- your employer, the leader of your community of faith (mosque, temple, church, etc.) attesting that you are a person of good character.  And you should choose a location for these lessons where there will be a parent or others present ALL times, so that you are never actually alone with someone else's child.

Churches, schools and recreational centers often have pianos. You need to be willing to pay a rental fee for use of these facilities, and to show that you have the appropriate insurance for yourself.

  2. Is there a community center, school or church/synagogue in the area?  Is there a boys/girls club?  Maybe a fraternal organization like the Elks, Rotary Club, Moose, etc. would be willing to help out.  Look in the yellow pages for community organizations or contact your chamber of commerce.
