I was out on the range the other day, when I hit a ball with my driver. The ball did its typical fade, but halfway down the range it curved back to the left. It was so strange. Can someone please explain to me how the ball curves right, then comes back left during its flight path? Also, there wasn't any wind at the range. I think that my instructer told me that it was called a slook (slice/hook).

  1. A Slook? I've never heard of it. Sometimes golf balls do that, it's happen to me a few times, at first I thought it was aliens trying to attack my golf ball then I realised that the range balls are not that good of quality. Ha Ha

    Have a good one...

  2. range balls can tend to be very beaten up.  this results in many atypical things occurring.  also be aware that most range balls are limited flight, meaning they only go 80 percent of your normal distance, so dont be frustrated if you are not getting the same kind of distance on the range as you are on the course.

    hope that helps

  3. The range ball would of had a crack in it which makes the weighting of the ball uneaven, which makes the ball sometimes curve both ways.

  4. This occurred on Persimmon drivers in the old days.  I found that this did happen with the older Taylor Made Equipment of the 90s.  This is called "the Gear Effect" and it is based on the curvature of the face of the driver.

Should the ball be hit more towards the Toe, this will impart a certain directional spin, this spin will start to have an effect on the flight.  Yes, the ball flight will look like it is heading to the right lets say, and then it returns back towards the center.

This was created for this very purpose to compensate for mishits.

    HOWEVER...

The key word that you used...is "On the Range"

Be advised that range balls is not exactly created for quality...but, more for durability to be pounded over and over again.  If the range ball is dirty, faded, or worn out...this could simply mean that the ball is out of balance...that's why sometimes, even a well struck hit, will just yield a flight that resembles topping or a total mishit. Remember, this is only a driving range ball, and sometimes has nothing in common with your regular game or round.
