  1. maybe she is just stuborn ...

  2. you know, I am like that.  I forget alot of things, like how to multiply and subtract fractions.  You could sit down with her for a while and give her one on one attention, or maybe have a tutor help her.  That is what I need.

  3. Daer Karen J,

Maybe this student would benefit from a good testing at your school's expense?  Many kids get shunted forward each year and have not grasped the necessary material.  Please do not let this student suffer that way.

Get her help with the district's resources.

  4. Ask school to do testing to see if she can qualify for special ed services.

  5. Try breaking things down in to step by step tasks and practice.

It may be that she is being overwhelmed by the tasks you're presenting her with.

If you break them up then she may remember the first few steps and then from there you build on to it. Also repeat and revise often as this will help her to retain the information.

Make as many things as normal multi-sensory but work within that subject.

Example 5a+6b=11ab. Use two different colours of blocks or two different objects to represent the different letters which you have in the required numbers.

So you would have something like

    5 apples+6 banannas= 11apples and bannanas.

  6. We have this problem with our son.  Sadly, by 6th grade he was so  neglected by teachers,  he was unbelievably behind, and now I home school him.

It's very nice to know that there are dedicated teachers out there and I am honored to answer your question.

Repetition--mulitsensory approach.  My son can write a spelling word 21 times and still get it wrong on a test.  Get the body involved, use sight and sound.

For example, when I was young, I would do ballet, 1st position, then stop 2x2=4, then perform 1st position again.  My parents and sibs thought I was nuts.    School informed my parents I was slow.   I stayed pretty much an A student until harder grades where I started to faulter.

You did not mention how old  or what grade the student is in, so I just assume it's a lower grade.

Small amounts of info at at time.  For example, this is a square, this a rectangle, this is a triangle.  That's it.  The next day repeat, with pictures and anything you can use with touch.

Offer a Monday reward if he/she practices over the weekend.  Spelling tests, offer extra practice days.  My son studies no more than 5 per day.  Next day, mini quiz on 5 then add 5 more.  By the time the week is over he has mastered his words.  But sadly he does forget many if he does not use them a lot.

Encourage parents to read to her./him  This was my saving grace, even the teachers noticed this about my son.  I have been reading to my son since he was very small.

Hang out on bean bag chairs, take turns reading aloud.  You'll become a great speaker and shehe  won't have to read out loud for long periods of time.

Get to know student-likes and dislikes.

My son suffers from anxiety disorder--they tell me this can effect memory.

Insist on testing by the school.

We like to make things large!  Use cardboard scraps and colorful markers.   Saturn--have the student draw and  learn a few facts.  The next day, work on the masterpiece, repeat a few facts, and add one or two more.  With my son, we do a math paper, then English, take a break, another math, science---find what works, then stick to it.    Be creative.   You'll be wasting your breath with volumes of information; in one ear out the other!  If child is so frustrated--they are really not able to learn all that well, and they do need to master the basics--and feel like they've master the basic before they move on to harder stuff.

I hope this helps.  Good luck to you!
