I have to buy a manual SLR camera for a college photography class, any suggestions?

i have owned an olympus om-1 since 1980, manual 35mm slr and have never had a problem with it. you can find a nice used one on ebay...

Something to consider is that since you're using it for a class you're probably going to want to share lenses with others in your class. If that's the case I would suggest getting a Canon or a Nikon as those are the two main brands. If you look on Ebay you can get some of the last-generation models (Canon XTi, 20D or 30D) for quite cheap.

Canon Digital Rebel XTi, $545 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC for Canon, $379; if you must have a zoom, the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, $960  is a good choice.

Good manual cameras are:

Nikon FM

Pentax K1000

Canon AE1, which is an automatic exposure camera, with full manual over rides. Not sure if this one fits your bill though.

A good camera for class at a reasonable price may be had in the OM1 line by Olympus. It's above satisfactory for your use and should be in the $75-$125 range w/ a 50mm lense. This is a sturdy, reliable camera that's lot lighter than most others with professional options. Also the OM2 is readily available for a bit less change ($30-$60) but definitly not as much of a pro- model. If you want one you can drop test into a mud puddle and come up shooting look into the Nikon F Series (quite heavy but also about $60). In any case, and becauses of age insist that the mirror, seals for film and mirror are okay or replaced as these were common headaches on vintage equipment. I owned and used them all and still have my OM1.
