It depends...  When you call my extension you dial an 800 number and an auto-attendant message gives you several options, one of which is to dial 1 then the extension number.  Your person may have this feature at their work or it could be like the other way to call me at my desk...  that is...  to dial a conventional phone number with a local exchange number like...  603-555-1234...  the 1234 being the extension number.  Obviously that number is fictitious but the example is still accurate.

  2. Most of the time with those, you dial the normal phone number first, wait for it to pick up (usually it will be an automated system) and then it will say "enter your extension now." If you get a real person, just ask them to connect you to extension 1234.
