You might want to start with some general information on the volcano first.

Also try looking for any recent data from the volcano (Your dad could really help you out here!) and maybe some statistics from the eruption on how far away from the volcano actual damage was done.

I do have a couple tidbits for you. Mt.St.Helens blew up on a Sunday morning that happened to be the 100`th anniversary of the first Sunday School Class. Washington is a very Large state! The eruption felt like an earthquake and ash covered the whole state. It seemed only minutes for the ash to be on the eastern side of the state.Anyway,the state is gorgeous with lots of parks and camping places.
