  1. Is there a list of community service projects approved by your school?  School districts that have this, usually have a list of approved places.  Check on that first.  It depends upon your interests.  What do you want to major in, in college?  Try to do something that interests you.  Community service projects my daughter did in h.s......worked with girl scouts, worked as a junior leader with the little girls; did volunteer help with after school tutoring/homework help with public school kids; volunteered at an elderly assisted living complex; assisted in the school office to file records, answer phone, peer counseling; check with your school!

  2. Visit a nursing home and read to people who can't see that well.  Ask their office for volunteers where they can use you.  They CAN use you and you will learn a lot about life from the old folks.

  3. kasey, there are many ways to get those community service hours in. Almost anything you do will really help somebody.

Clean up a playground. Add rubber mulch to the base of the slide.

Pick up litter in a public park or on the roadside.

    Sweep glass off biking trails.

Weed a public cemetery. If it's not a matter of public record already, map and photograph the site to log who is where.

Paint benches and picnic tables in public parks. Get the town's permission first.

Read short stories aloud at a nursing home.

Find out what's required to bring your (very calm) dog to visit a nursing home, where many people who are in very poor shape mentally still respond to animals. (<--my favorite idea)

Work in a food cupboard/pantry project, sorting and boxing food for the needy.

Work in a "soup kitchen," serving hot meals and a smile to the homeless, who don't get enough of either.

Volunteer to befriend a special-needs person. Take her with you to the park, the mall, the movies, our for ice cream. Many such people have no real friends, nor any opportunity to make them.

Organize a toy or kids' book drive for a school, settlement house, or other place where poor kids don't have what you do.

Organize a computer drive, same thing for older kids--but they can learn skills that will help them better their lives.
