  1. I think you do need the cream of tartar - it's in the spices section at most grocery stores.  Here's another recipe that's really easy, and yet another using alum (also found in the spices section) instead:

    VERY EASY:

    2 cups flour

    1 cup water

    Mix together well. You can put dry Kool-Aid or Jell-O in the mix if you want colored dough.

    ANOTHER RECIPE:

    2 c. boiling water

    1/2 c. salt

    1 tbsp. alum

    2 c. flour

    2 tbsp. oil

    Food coloring

    Dissolve salt and alum in boiling water. Add food coloring, oil, and flour. Knead 5 minutes. Store in air-tight container in refrigerator. Will last months!

  2. You can find it in the spice section of your grocery store.

    As for the necessity... I recommend it...but in a pinch I have substituted alum or not used it at all.  I believe the purpose of it is to help it last longer.  So I guess you'll need to consider how long they use this play dough at the school.

    Great job for you fo taking the initiative to make it... much better than purchased play dough if you ask me.  I add color and smell by adding a package of Kool-Aid instead of food coloring.

  4. I've used both alum and cream of tartar in playdough recipes and I personally prefer cream of tartar. It isn't necessary to use cream of tartar but I find that it keeps the playdough longer. I've found cream of tartar in the bulk food store also.

    If you want to give a scent to the playdough, mix some jello powder in the flower and it's going to smell nice.

  5. Isn't it just easier just to buy some playdough, I mean why would you make some. I have never met a person who has made their on playdough. Good for you! Usually when you do make things from scratch you should follow the recipe or things go wrong. Good luck!

  6. I believe it is necessary to use the cream of tartar. I made the same kind that you cook. i made it last March and it is still soft and as good as the day I made it. I'll never buy playdough in a store again!

  7. Kool Aid playdough was always my favorite when teaching preschool.  And yes, I believe the cream of tarter is necessary.  Here is a favorite recipe of mine:

        *  1 cup flour

        * 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

        * 1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid

        * 1/4 cup salt

        * 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

        * 1 cup water

    Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar and Kool-Aid® in a medium pot. Add water and oil. Stir over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes. When mixture forms a ball in pot, remove. Knead until smooth. Put in a plastic bag and refrigerate.

  8. heres the play dough recipe I use

    3/4 cup flour

    1/4 cup salt

    1/4cup water

    2 TBSP cooking oil

    food coloring

    knead ingredients until cobined and color is distributed. store in plastic wrap or a zip lock bag

    no cream of tartar in this recipe. Cream of tartar is usually in the baking isle next to the spices.
