London is very expensive even though it's a great place to visit for a tourist. Generally the further North you go, the cheaper things get.

how long do you intend to spend here?  England is expensive.  London and the home counties (any county that borders London) is expensive to live in, accommodation is expensive, but you can do flat share - check out www.gumtree.com

Expensive is relative, if you are moving there from New York City or Chicago, it isn't.  If you are moving there from Guatemala or Mexico, it is.  Check with the United Kingdom immigration officials.  You can't move there without talking to them anyway.
