  1. play safe. she has to make up a shot on most holes, so make her earn it by keeping your ball in play. Take all the safe options: middle of the fairway, middle of the greens, not too much power, make allowances for bunkers & hazards and keep them out of play if possible.

Mainly, just hit within yourself. Given the choice of hitting 200 yards maximum in a somewhat uncontrolled direction or 150 yards in a relatively controlled direction, always take the latter. Don't lose the game, make her win it. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

  2. Play smart, not brave.

Don't worry about the score; it will take care of itself.

Drive for show, putt for dough... each 4 foot putt counts the same as a 200 yd. drive.

Get her drunk before the match?

  3. Match play is different than Stroke play. The biggest difference is the person who is farthest away always goes first. Example: if you putt the ball close to the hole. DON'T hole out. The other player who is farther away has to putt next. In match play you can also conceed putts. If someone has a 2 footer which you think they can make you may say "that's good" and they pick it up.

The 13 shots are probably to your advantage and not for the reason you normally think. Generally the higher your handicap the more eratic your game. You may have some pars and bogeys but you have a few of those 7s, 8s, or 9s. If you are playing match play with a handicap then you will get a stroke on the #1-#13 handicap holes. On each of these holes you will take off one stroke. If you have a horrible hole she will only when 1 point/hole, even if she beats you by 4 on that hole. So try to relax and enjoy the match. If you want to brush up on match play rules you can check out the USGA website.

  4. what helps me is to think about other things while approaching your shot, and not about what club to hit and such, it only tires and stresses you out.

think about what shot and club to hit once you get up to the ball, go through your routine, and swing smooth.

  5. Make more putts than she does.  Match play is all about who makes the most putts.  It doesn't necessarily have to be birdies, but putting wins the match.  You have 13 shots to play with so make your putts.

  6. Arrive a bit early and spend extra time on the putting green and/or chipping green.  Short game will be your biggest opportunity to pick up strokes during the match. I also agree with Paul to play safe shots.  Use lesser clubs if it means keeping it in the fairway or away from hazards.  Avoiding penalty strokes is critical in match play. Also, you must always know what your opponent lies and the stroke situation for each hole.  Play your game accordingly.

  7. Have fun enjoy don't count your score till the end of the mach make sure you don't take it to seriously just have fun.

  8. keep your cool no matter what getting angry will only make you play worse.

    try to have fun.

    and dont do nything stupid

    for example:

don't try to pull a flop shot over a tree or anything just play it safe and hit it around.

  9. the great thing about match play is, if you duff a hole, you can get it back.  play smart, play within your abilities, and don't get down on yourself if something goes awry.
