Question:

I have to take a ballet class in the 2009-2010 school year, but I'm chubby, thus scared to death?

I'm pear-ish shaped, so the idea of a tutu, or any tight leggings, make me feel uncomfortable. My measurements are 33-26-41.

Do you think I'm just too self-conscious, or should I start making some legitimate plans to lose weight? I don't want to be the flopping whale in the room full of skinny girls, but I'm also not sure that I want to lose my only curves...

Will ballet be really hard for me, being a bit overweight?

  1. no way! you are definitely being self conscious. some girls like you don't even have the courage to do what you are about to do, so go for it! just because you are chubby shouldn't stop you. have fun! :]

  2. wow i wouldnt even consider you chubby. those are perfect measurments but its all about being comfortable. if your not going to be comfortable in a leotard and tights then lose some weight. you cant dance when your self concious itll make you dance worse. as soon as you just let go and not care THEN youll be a great dancer. dont worry about it. look your best through confidence even if you chose not to lose weight. be comfortable and have fun. ballet is a great experience make the best of it.

  3. sacrifice,diet,exercise u need it.

  4. I think you should  start making plans. No one is happy until they have their ideal body truthfully. Until you think you are beautiful the ballet won't matter. Even if other people tell you your weight is fine, its what YOU think what makes the final cut. Being happy with the way you are is hard for anyone.

  5. how old are you?

first of all, there is a girl who took ballet with me a few years ago. she was plump, but she was a great dancer. we didn't use tutus for ballet that year so she was fine. i don't think it would be hard for you if this girl did it. so i'm just letting you know, youre not alone.

by saying "i have to take ballet class" i take it that you aren't into it? well maybe you should loose some weight. good luck!

  6. Speaking from personal experience, i no what i can be like to feel uncomfortable in the ballet class.

try wearing shorts over your leotard to cover your legs but many teachers would tell you to take them off after a few exercises. also, black is sliming so black tights and leotard will slim you and add length to your body.

but i wouldn't worry too much about losing weight as when you dance it will just fall off

im sure you will look beautiful :D x

  7. i get what your saying about the ballet tights they are daunting when your not size 0 however you could buy a ballet skirt, this will cover the bum and tops of the thighs and ballet wrap arounds to cover bingo wings (although i don't think you'll have to go that far don't worry)

also don't worry about it making you the best in the class there was a girl in my old dance class who was a uk size 14 easy and she came dancing every lesson in her skirt and cardigan. she was fantastic she had gorgeous feet, amazing extension, fantastic jumps, she was great. weight doesn't stop you being a good dancer, however it might stop you getting on a professional stage.

also once you've been dancing for a bit the weight will start dropping off you then you can throw away the skirt and cover ups.

  8. Hey there,

Not all ballet students look like the Ballet Russes, but there is nothing wrong with doing some self improvement. And I don't mean starving yourself! h**l no! What you need to be focusing on is increasing strength and muscle tone. Once you do this, the extra kilo or two drops off anyway because of improved metabolism. I don't think you're fat, but I was in a similar situation and it was building muscle, not losing weight, that was the turning point for the improvement in my self esteem. Remember that nobody is happy with their body all the time, and ALSO remember that although you might think you're flopping around like a whale, you're probably not anyway. The mind plays nasty tricks.
