i have to take organic and an upper level science course. some i know of are biochem, genetics, but i am kind of scared. im a transfer student from a community college and trying to get into a BA/MD program at Rutgers which i apply to in the spring. That means I need to ace these courses. Which are the best to take together and what other courses should i take with it.

  1. Genetics and biochem both are easier if you have a good foundation in organic chemistry.  All of the upper level courses can be challenging.  Take advantage of any outside remidiation session the TA or professors put on.  I think upper level calculus is a good way to get your mind to start thinking abstractly.  Good luck, study hard, you'll do fine!

  2. Speaking for myself, and I've taken the upper level classes that you are talking about, the genetics courses are the easiest to understand and get a top grade in. It is more logical and something that you can solve with thinking. Organic chemistry and biochemistry, on the other hand require a lot of memorization of organic structures which was a lot harder for me. I guess it depends a lot on how your mind works. At that level of school you have to make good grades in everything. I understand advanced genetics years later. The organic chemistry courses I memorized enough to make the grades and forgot almost all of it later. Some people, on the other hand. probably did just the opposite. You may consider biology courses to take now as well.

  3. Be grateful that you got some of your basic chem classes out of the way in a small community college. Had you waited until now to do them you would find yourself in a class of 200 and never meet your professor, just his appointed student aides had you had any problems. Upper level chem classes are smaller and I would pick times when classes were smallest. Sign up for what you will do well in keeping in mind what you need and what is available. I like early mornings myself but others do not. If you anticipate problems then don't max your schedule or try to cram more than you can handle in the "tough classes" department. Also, choice depends on whether you work the family farm or find positions elsewhere in the industry. Only you can decide where to go from here. you will probably get into a graduate research study and that will help point the way.
