ever since I decided I didn't want to pursue it as a career. I used to practice all day. I still want to play and practice, I'm just not motivated anymore. What do I do to get back into it?

  1. You did not say what instrument.

Get involved in a group. Find music you like to play.  Spend some time at the music store. Find some books of your kind of music.

I am no longer a pro or a teacher.  I only practice for an hour or so  a week, but would really miss it if I quit.

I play in a group of 4 now for receptions etc.  We perform about 6 times a year.

  2. one thing i tell my students; if you watch tv, there are these things called commercials, practice during the commercials during 2 or 3 hours of tv.

  3. What Kab said.

I find there are sometimes days and weeks that go by without me picking up any of my instruments -- I'm busy, or I'm tired after work, or I just don't feel like it.  But then if I make myself get out the fiddle or banjo or mandolin, whatever, and get started playing, I remember how much I actually LOVE to play, and I'll practice for 2 or 3 hours, no problem.

If you can set up a regular practice schedule for yourself, even if its just a half hour a day or whatever, that would be great.

Remember, if you're not a professional musician, you're not obligated to play or practice -- you're doing it because you love it.  If you're going through a period in your life where you don't have time or energy for music on a regular basis, don't beat yourself up over it.  As long as you still want to play and practice, you will eventually get back to it.  Don't sweat it.

  4. Make it fun for yourself. Reward yourself after practicing. Like, buy yourself chocolate, or something you like. You could also try to make it into a self competition. Think of how you did last time you practiced and push yourself to be better the next time.

  5. Form a habit... once practicing becomes part of your everyday life, you don't need as much motivation. For me, I'll usually go to practice immediately after work before I come back to my dorm. I won't let myself come back and eat dinner until I've gotten a good hour or more of practice in. You have to force yourself sometimes. For me, I don't eat until my practicing is done ;)
