One side has sorta like a cross or x type marking with what looks like lions or some animal sort and castles , there are also what looks to be lettters around the edge. cant really make them out. The other side has like a tic tac toe symbol with letters and number on it. I see 8 , A , P, H but I cant find a date on either. Who knows how long they have been under water. What are they and do you know how much they are worth?

  1. possibly pieces of 8 from the 16th or 17th century from sunken ship. maybe silver but you must determine condition to find out value.

  2. You didn't say what metal that they are made of of, but I am guessing that they are silver and about the size of one half dollar, but not very round.  I am guessing that they are 8 Reales made at the Mexico City mint around 1735.  A photo would be necessary to identify them any more.  I have bought similar coins for under $20, but they usually sell for about $100.

  3. It would help if you could just guess the lettering. I read Spanish so I might be able to figure it out if it were Spanish.

Also, I collect coins and I don't think I have one quite like yours. It's very tricky a little bit more detail would help.

The other guy was right. Check out a coin shop but I very, strongly suggest to go to more then just one to get the job done. (coin dealers are often sneaky and give a wrong answer to con you out of a good coin) Before you do go to a coin shop I suggest get a coin book and check it out.

Another thing: (you may not be interested) You could check out the currents and winds of this time and figure out its history.

The above is a link to Mel Fisher's Treasures. He is the one that found the Atocha, the richest find ever. There are many pictures of coins he has for sale and many are similar to what you are saying. You might look through the pictures and see if you can find one similar to yours. Some are worth as much as $30,000.00. I would contact Fisher about how to proceed, they are very knowledgeable people. I would take detailed photographs to send and be very very careful with the coins. There are definitely unscrupulous people out there.

    Be cautious and Good Luck.

  5. I would suggest you either go to a coin dealer, which can be found in major cities.  Or go to good library and they should be able to point you to books that may help.  Again that may mean a library in a major city.  If they are solid gold that alone could mean they are valuable.
