  1. This answer may sound trite, but a bar of music is separated by a line in the music. So you should see it sectioned off, and based on the timing some music may have longer measures than others. But wherever you see a line that separates one line of music to the next, that is considered a bar. So in this silly picture the dashes are the musical notes and the lines are separating one bar of music from the other (| - - - - - |- - - - |).

16 bars is pretty typical of shows, and the person above mentioned the 16-bar audition books and they usually have some really great finds in there (you could probably order it on Amazon). Find 16 bars that really shows off your voice and best of luck!

  2. i sang "part of your world" from the little mermaid for a very important audition once, and it was a very fun song, i would sing it if i were you, and remember to use vibrato, and keep your vowels clear and im sure youll do great..

16 measures is 4 lines of music, so that would be from "what would i give if i could live out of these waters" to the ending of the song.

  3. Here is a book called "The 16-Bar Theatre Audition" for $19.95.

The second source is a sheet of music that shows you the 16 bars of music. Actually you will count 18 measures since there is a beginning and an ending that are not part of the count.

    Here is a suggestion

How do I select which 16  bars to sing?

Make your selection from the most interesting part of the song.  With 16 bars, this usually means singing the last verse, so you can make a grand finish on the high note!  Simply put, start counting bars from the end, and see where it gets you.

Also, you don't have to be perfect about the exact number of bars being 16. They just don't want you to sing an entire song.

Look at Melinda Doolittle's audition which is about 16 bars. It's only 35 seconds, but it has an incredible impact.
