AND there was a child of a guest who put small amounts of pepsi and salt in the tank. Did that kill it or was is it the fact that the female and male lived in the same place??

  1. If you didn't dechlorinate the tap water, that may be the source of the death,

Pepsi  is just phosphoric acid, caramel color, sugar and flavorings: In small quantities I can't see it hurting fish, provided it's dilute and the water is changed afterwards. Most fish can tolerate small amounts of salt, too.

The most likely cause of death for the female betta is that the male killed her: they will do that. In nature, the males and females only stay in the same area when they're mating.

  2. I'm not sure if it was the pepsi and salt. If it was aquarium salt, it's okay. However, you stated they were in the same place. The males are very aggressive to each other. The male killed your female. That is why they're called Fighting Fish. You should have kept them in separate tanks. Females are the only ones who could be put with other fish other than the same species.

  3. most likely the childs fault but u cant blame the little kid hes probably just trying to help... thinking the fishes need some pepsi too quench their thirst ;)

but ya the pepsi might have done the job... if not then maybe your fishes had been fighting

  4. it was most likely the pepsi and salt. (I would have kicked the little brats butt!) Unless the female had large amounts of damage to her scales and fins (ripped or torn or even gone completely), it probably wasn't the male.

  5. Small amounts of salt shouldn't hurt anything... salt is even a recommended treatment for some illnesses.  Not too sure about the pepsi though.

How big was the tank?  Male bettas are very territorial and really should live by themselves.  If you want baby bettas put the male and female together while they get it on, then move the male back into his own tank.  Sometimes if they have enough space males and females can make it work... but you need a lot more room than if you keep them apart.

My guess would be that the male harassed the female to death.  Just a guess though.

  6. kill  that child

  7. I have a 14 gallon tank and I put some salt in there the other day and my betta is fine.  I do not know about the pepsi.  Have your bettas been fighting?

  8. You cannot keep a male and female betta together, and it may very well have been the male who killed her.  The pepsi and salt may also have hurt--you should have done a 50% water change immediately after the incident.
