i got two cockateil last week, they are going great but i cant figure out which one is male and female. one of them is very active and doesnot allow second cockateil to play or eat while he/she is eating. i think he is male as i read some article but i am not sure. the second one is very quite and doesnot do much. what should i do should i separated them, because the first one is not allowing the second one to eat. and if i tried to scared him out he doesnot care. i am just worried the second one will not get enought to eat. can i take out the first out of the cage and let the second eat because i dont have a second cage and i live in a studio apt so i cant really separated them. so it is the nature and just live them alone.

so please help

  1. Above their beak is a color.

eITHER DARK PURPLE OR BLUE orPEACH OR TAN

the dark colors are the males

    light colors are the females

  2. You can get them sexed.  Try a vet or a pet store.

  3. males have yellow heads.

    females have dull heads.

i know because i have a male and a female and the male has a bright yellow head.

  4. It sounds to me that the DOMINANT cockateil is the male. Male cockateils are more boastful, and possibly be more colorful. They will be the ones to most likely talk when you own a breeding pair.

If you haven't got a book about your cockateils, I suggest you buy one, you won't regret it.

I gather you are going to breed this pair. You can tell for sure when that situation arrises, for the male is the bird that gets on top of the female. The female is the one that lays the eggs. The male builds the nest (thats right) and the female rests and eats to build up her strength.

Also on each of your cockateils cheeks, you will see a patch of color (maybe orange). The male cheek patch will be lighter than the female cheek patch.

Their additudes vary; some are quiet while others are bold and active., some friendly with strangers or only allow family members to touch them., some like to be petted gently while others don't like to be petted.

Have you tried to put another small bowl in the cage?

Don't  only feed your cockateils seeds; try some fruits, veggies, cooked grains, beans, tofu, sprouts, cooked or uncooked pasta. Also you might want to try small servings of fish, chicken.

Good luck, and go buy a book..or go to the liberary.
