Are there any ways to help besides running the sweeper, cleaning the carpet or getting rid of the dogs(which I couldn't do because they wouldn't let me).

  1. Most dogs don't normally smell if they are properly groomed and bathed on a regular basis. There are some breeds, Irish Setter is one, that does carry a smell that cannot be got rid of but that's the nature of the dog. You can buy perfumed dog sprays at the pet shop that will mask any smell on the dogs' coat and you can use air fresheners. Regularly spray your carpets, soft furnishings and the dogs' bed with Febreze. Get a good routine of grooming and bathing and that should be enough to sort the problem.

  2. Replace carpet with tile or simlar.

Clean carpet more frequently -add a 1/4 c. of bleach to the water every other time.

    Simple Solution

    Baking Soda or Charcoal

Room fresheners -very last choice. I prefer to avoid chemicals as often as I can.

    Bathe the dogs more frequently.

Use dog beds if you're not already.

Crate the dogs and clean the bedding more frequently.

    Adjust?

I think the doggie smell varies quite a bit based on where you live.

Rarely, if evern do I smell that wet dog smell.  We have "frito feet" or the smell of corn chips or popcorn and I really don't think that's so bad.

I think I would rather smell my "frito feet" crew than those women that wear too much fragrance.  Now that makes me choke.

  3. well it also depends what are you feeding your dogs? If you feel them chicken, or anything that's not dry food than your dogs start to smell, thats why it's better to feed dog there dry food because they don't start to smell.

  4. Have you tried steam cleaning?  And why are they kept in the family room?  Do they go anywhere else?  Like outside?  Or even try taking out the carpet and putting down laminent.  I don't really understand how dogs can stink up a room that much.  If they are exercised and groomed enough, they shouldn't smell.

  5. I shampoo my carpets often, bathe the dogs once a week, and use air freshener after airing the rooms out by opening the windows!

  6. Buy yourself a room ionizer. It takes away "doggy" odors and it also improves the air quality for you and your dogs. I got one from QVC for about 35 dollars.

  7. Giving the dogs baths on a regular basis (maybe once a month) and thoroughly cleaning often is pretty much the only way to keep your home smelling nice and fresh.

  8. when you think about it, carpets are horrible catchers of all sorts of germs and smells.  i would first, take out the carpet and put down a hard floor.  Be sure your dogs are bathed and clean, and  bad dog food causes dogs to give off a bad odor.  Get them on a good, healthy food.  Make sure their teeth are cared for and cleaned.

  9. I feel your pain!!! i have one stinky dog of my own! As weird as it sounds i have tried this and it does work-to an extent. Keep small bowls of white vinegar (out of the precious pups reach of course although i doubt they would mess with it) in the area where they are kept. The antimicrobial qualities of the vinegar will help counteract the smell...but as we all know vinegar doesn't smell too good unless your on the boardwalk.  Washing your dogs too often can actually make them smell worse! try not to wash your dogs more than twice a month and when you do, use a shampoo made especially to prevent odor. Of course any time you shampoo, steam, or clean the floors would be a mandatory dog washing!! If there's a window and its warm enough outside, open it up and throw a small fan facing outward to air out the room as well!! Quality plug-in air fresheners (like febreze) help make a room smell good instead of covering up the smell. Good Luck!!
