Question:

I have two mean cockatiels, how can I tame them?

My uncle gave me two cockatiels, one male and one female. But they are SO mean, even to each other! They bite and peck at each other, and don't even think of putting your finger in there to try to get them to hop on it. Sometimes I can catch the female, and I gently hold her wings down and pet her. But the whole time she's turning her head around biting me, pecking at me. It doesn't hurt, I just don't want to scare her. But I want a bird I can put on my finger, or my shoulder, or pet, and that is definitely NOT these birds! Is there any way to tame them? Should I continue to take the female out and pet her even though she hates it in the hopes that she'll get used to it? I've never had birds before...

  1. give up on the cockatiels they wont get better

  2. Well I had two parakeets who just couldn't get along but now they have chicks! Well if they only have been together for a while they will have to get used to it and they probably will get used to each other and have chicks like mines did. Try not to diciplin the cocktails much. It is best just to leave the alone and get used to each other. But if there are any bleeding happening you must seperate them from cages and put their cages close to each other  they can get used to each other a little. After a while you can try putting them in the same cages again but if that doesn't go out well just keep them in seperate cages but make sure you keep them company and try hand tame them and all so you can play with your new cocktail! Hope that helps!

  3. separate them work with the female let her out if her wings are clipped if not get them clipped and let her out on cage for a bit at a time and talk To her offer her a treat in your hand as time goes by try to get her to climb on hand but not in cage that is her home and you are invading it work slowly and find a noise like clicking your tongue or tttsk repeat as you feed her hand treats kissy noise your tongue works well e-mail me more for more info

  4. Maybe they just don't like each other and she ,your aunt just never payed any attention to it,If you can afford it maybe get another cage and separate them and try to pay attention to them separately, unfortunately if they are mean to begin with ,you think nothing will work but I had a bird the other day who was crawling up my belly to bite my belly ,a tiel,my new ( friendly) tiel and 3 days later it actually let me pet it's back ,a little bit.Try letting the door open and give them a little freedom, they might have been in a cage from day one and birds are free creatures they are not meant to be in cages,in my opinion of course, and offer them some millet spay, most cockatiels just can't resist millet I don't know why ,but they love it.Good luck to you sweetie .I know your frustration, the same exact thing happened to me,but don't give up.

  5. Stop trying to handle these birds. They sound like they are very stressed out. I would leave them alone so they will stop feeling crowded and fearing you. They fight because they are so affraid of You they don't know any better then to not bite at each other out of fear. They are not being mean. Leave them alone, they are NOT TAMED. If you want tamed birds, I suggest finding a breeder in your area and offering to trade the pair for 1 hand tamed bird you can bring home and love. Otherwise you are just going to keep these wild birds thinking you can handle them, when you will never get to. These birds you have, have no intentions of trusting you or anyone else. And trading them for a hand tamed cockatiel will give those birds a home with someone who understands them more so then you do and get you the pet you want.

  6. well start with just talking to them. every hour for about a week (yes its boring but it helps) and just talk to them be like pretty bird or somthing. then start by putting on a glove and holding it up against your chest (make sure your not wearing and jewlery.) and just petting it. and do that for a week and eventually they will get better.
