I have two questions...?

My 5 month old son has small red bumps on his face, arms and legs. Could it be allergies? He's had them for two days now. I just noticed them on his legs and arms today. You have to look closely to see them there, but on his face it's quite noticeable. We recently started feeding him rice cereal. I was wondering if perhaps it's because of that. Or could it just be the change of weather?

Oh yeah, not all of them are bumps. Only some are bumpy. The rest are smooth when I run my finger over it. And it doesn't seem to be irritating him either.

Also, what were some signs that your baby was teething? I think my son might be teething but I'm not quite sure. He's really fussy these days. While eating his bottle, he'd stop and whine for a bit before eating again. He rubs his cheeks and drools a lot. He usually soaks up the front of his shirt unless I put a bib on him. He also blows bubbles too.

  1. not sure about the red stuff, sorry, but about the teething, it sounds like he is, i'd get some teething toys for him to chew on, and sometimes one of those icepack things that has the blue gel in them work good for them to chew on, it numbs the pain of teething.

  2. Sounds like you have all the signs for teething.  Also be aware of the 'drool stool'.  Your son could start with the diarrhea - which is also a normal part of teething.

My son experienced skin irritations from all the drool as well.

If it's around his face and could be a result of all the drooling, try this:  rub in a little bit of vaseline to provide a little bit of a barrier between his skin and the drool.  It'll work as a nice moisturizer and will keep him a little more comfortable while he's feeling like the human sprinkler.

(Trust your gut - if you get worried about the seriousness of your child's symptoms, don't hesitate to talk to your pediatrician!!)

  3. http://www.nasonex.com/nasx/application?...

  4. it may be allergy, my 3 month old got red bumpy on her forehead coz i used some baby oil on her head a few days earlier, went to docs and got some cream he said it was an allergy/reaction/ezcema, maybe see what the doc says......it could well be the rice cereal....

  5. the bumps/rash sounds like eczema, try putting some aquaphor on it. and it does sound like he is teething

  6. yes he's probably teething. if you don't already have teething things for him to chew on, go get some. also try some teething gel. just watch your fingers! :o) when my kids were teething i would sometimes wrap an ice cube in a baby washcloth, tie it up, and give it to them to chew on.

as far as the bumps, i at first thought perhaps your baby has scarlet fever, but you didn't mention symptoms of discomfort such as a fever or flu. if it's been hot outside, it could be a heat rash. my youngest and i get those from time to time. if the bumps are not in his diaper area, then i'd rule out being allergic to the rice cereal. when in doubt, contact your doc.

  7. The bumps are probably eczema as rice rarely causes an allergic reaction, but I'd quit giving it to him for a few days and see if it goes away. As far as the teething, I'm going through the same thing now, and yes he's teething. Get some teething toys or rings or use a clean, cold baby washcloth (nothing with loose fibers that can choke though). Also infant tylenol or motrin can help tremendously, although you need to talk to his Dr. to get the right dosage for his weight/age- Motrin isn't supposed to be given before the child is 6 months or 17 lbs.

  8. take him the the doctors

  9. I can't really say about the bumps but I would check with my pediatrician to be on the safe side.  As far as teething, the baby would obviously be crabby but he/she will stick their fists and other things into their mouth.  There will also be a lot of drool.  Have fun, glad those days are over for me.

  10. He's probably teething I would give him infant tylenol and see if that helps. Contact your pediatrician to see what dose amount.  My son has the red bumps too and I took him yesterday to do doctor and she said it was eczema(have no idea how to spell it) but anyway she prescribed him so hydrocortizone cream for it to see if it gets better.  I would talk to the pediatrician about that too. It's better to get an answer from them then to get one from someone on here who has no idea what they are talking about.  Some of them don't.  Anyway hope this helps

  11. About the bumps, it's hard to say without actually seeing it.  Are they individual bumps on him, or more like clusters?

When my daughter gets a heat rash it is usually a few individual bumps scattered over her chest or neck, not clusters.  Some do just look like a red spot but aren't raised.  Usually it's gone within a day or so.  If it lasts longer than a couple days you may want to take him to the pedi just to be on the safe side.

It definately sounds like he's teething.  Drooling, irritability, rubbing ears/face, chewing on hands/toys are signs of teething.  Usually the bottom two front ones are the first to cut through.  If the gums have a whitish color there then he may have some teeth coming soon.  My daughter is 10 months old with 8 teeth now.  Whenever she is teething she gets like that for about a week (sometimes 2) before any teeth cut through.  About 2-3 days after they cut she's back to her normal happy self.
