  1. If the fitting with three wires is Live, Neutral and Earth then that is fine. Live will be red, Neutral will be black and Earth will either be bare or yellow/green sleeved.

If the one with two wires is Live an Neutral then you should look for the earth, it may have been cut back.

The earth connector from the lamp must be connected to the earth connection of the mounting.

Don't use a lamp which is not "Double Insulated" on an unearthed mounting. It is risky and can be lethal in the event of a fault.

  2. If the one with three has two blacks and a white you connect the blacks together.  If it has a red and black you connect those two together. Usually when you have wall lamps ie both sides of a fireplace the wires from the first run to the second and they are controlled by a wall switch. You can ground directly to the metal wall box from the lamp.

  3. If the wire is twin and eth the earth has been cut at the butt so strip it back to find it then sleeve with Green and Yellow

  4. Yes it will matter. You need either to bring an earth to the point where the new lamp is to be fitted or take the fittings back to the shop and buy class 2 (double-insulated) wall lamps.
