I got verizon fios a couple of months ago and i don't like the router they provided. We have two desktops with gigabit ethernet and a laptop with wireless n. However the verizon fios router doesn't have those features. Also the verizon router uses the coax connection so i can't just replace the router. I was wondering if i can just add a plain access point by connecting it to the ethernet ports. Please tell me if this works. An example of what the access point might be is this http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=663

  1. Well, it can be done, but you do have to create a NEW network! You can't use the same NAT range or DHCP range as the exisiting network. You can just turn off DCHP on the DLINK, put the dlink on a static address with the FIOS router and let the FIOS router issue all DHCP then you can use the dlink..

BUT just a few quesitons first.  Do you use your local network heavily? If most of your use is the internet you won't gain anything at all! Its nice to have gigabit ethernet if you are on a business network with a local server, but the internet comes in at somewhere around 20mbs so how to you gain? You don't. Same thing for N wireless, you might gain some range but you won't gain speed (at least not to the internet).. SO what advantage do you gain?  I would evaluate all that and then decide.   The speed of the internet is the LOWEST speed within your network, and if that is what you use the most all the additional speed will gain you little (or nothing!)

Even 100mb ethernet is at least 5 times your internet speed. and 54mb G network is over twice!

    Just food for thought.

ADD: Oh forgot, yes you can add an N access point. AP's are just AP's no routing involved so they can be added to any router - If you add one you may want to disable the routers AP just to prevent interference.
