  1. Visit a local agent the works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget, and can help guide you with each companies underwriting requirements. There is no extra charge using an agent.

You may want to consider a higher deductible plan to save premium dollars. Remember, with health insurance you get what you pay for. Budget insurance will not have all the bells and whistles of a comprehensive policy. The agent can explain what you get with each plan and, more importantly, what you don't get.

  2. Find a company who pays for the majority of the premium as a benefit for employment

  3. Your employer.  Then, your spouse's employer.   Then welfare insurance - medicaid.  Then, a local independent agent.

Depending on your income, you likely can't qualify for welfare insurance.   So the job is usually the best, most affordable place.  A local agent can teach you all about it, but with health insurance, you get what you pay for (if it's too good to be true, it's not health insurance).

  4. Check with your state department of public welfare. They may have a health care or medical assistance plan for you.

In my state, PA, they have a very good program (adult basic) where you can pick up health coverage at a very low fee but there is a 18 to 24 month waiting period. However during this time you can pay for the coverage on an as needed basis.

Each state is different, check with your state first. If your state has nothing to fit you, then check with a local insurance agent (life and health) as each persons situation is different they can guide you to what plan is the best for your situation.

Going with the later solution it will depend on your current health, age, budget and deductable amounts.
